Oh, hey. Speaking of...there was this one guy in the latest round of new recruits. I think he said his name was Mako? Either way, he said you two were friends and I was just wondering if he ever got around to calling you like I suggested.

[He was already acting pretty weird when they talked face to face. Knowing him, Korra's guessing he must have decided to just wing it on his own instead of asking her for anything.

Or maybe he'd already gotten whatever information he needed from her when they ran into each other.]

He didn't even call?

[Wow, Mako. There better be a good excuse for that one.]

Did you two at least find each other?

Yeah, we must have run into each other right after you guys talked. Anyway, that's...Mako. He's one of my friends from Republic City.

[She makes a face, suddenly wondering if Zee remembers that conversation they had about her complicated love life at the party some time ago...]

[It was a distant conversation about the one word that seems to haunt every single one of their love lives. Hers included.]

He seems...nice. [Did that sound forced? She didn't mean for it to sound so forced.] Is he always that awkwardly stiff?

He's always been a lot more serious than his brother. [She gives a huff of laughter.] I thought he was a total jerk when I met him for the first time.

I think it's worse than usual because he's...actually from a year ahead of me now. Apparently, a lot happens.

[That...would explain some of it. Not all, but some.]

Like what? Did he tell you?

[All in or nothing??? There's really no other way to explain this anyway.]

...he said we dated for a while. And broke up.

[The surprising thing was, ironically, Zatanna wasn't as surprised as she thought she might be. Her mind vaguely drifted back to a past conversation they'd had about complicated relationships. It would also have been a lie to say she didn't wonder if this was going to affect the current thing she has with Conner.]

Is that a...good thing? Bad thing? Mix of both?

It's not good or bad, it's just...weird. And confusing.

I mean, I was in a relationship, and I don't even know anything about it.

[She sighs, quietly.]

At first, he kept moving away when I was too close. I guess that sort of hurt, too.

[She could only imagine. ~~Considering, in a way, she was more likely to be in Mako's position.~~]

I mean...if you two ended up in a relationship for a while, you must've really liked him. Or will like him. However that works.

I do...did like him a lot. But he was dating our other friend, remember?

And then...Haven happened. It's been so long, and no one from my time's showed up before this. I...kind of stopped expecting they would. It doesn't matter if I used to like him or not, or if it's been months, he's still one of the first friends I made in Republic City. Or ever.

What happened when we talked? It made me realize how much things have changed--for me and for him.

[Haven changed you. Sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better. But the longer you stayed, the more you changed. And so did your prorities. Sometimes...even your relationships.]

This place just loves throwing us curveballs when we least expect them, huh?

Tell me about it. He couldn't have come at a worst time either. He just got here, and Yao's been prepping for something big that could happen any day now.

[It's definitely a cause for worry.]

I missed him and the others, but I don't want them to be here.
