[It was the one thing keeping most of the West residents from moving up there permanently. Many a dates of times past had been cut short because of the inevitable effects. Sucked, but at least they could last long enough to enjoy themselves.]
Then again, how long could dinner take? I know Conner's a growing boy, but he doesn't eat that much.
[He wasn't a speedster.]
[...which, of course, meant the two had been up to more than just dinner. She had a few ideas in her head, but decided to wait for Korra to say anything before she risked going too far with the teasing.]
With the two of us? [Korra smiles, oblivious to Zatanna's thoughts for the moment.] Neither of us are really great in the kitchen--we weren't sure if it'd take us a while to make something decent.
Besides, we wanted time to just...talk, too. We've barely had any time to ourselves since we decided to stay together.
[And now Korra finally pauses.]
Um... all of that went without a hitch. We just...got a little carried away later.
[Korra's mouth opens. And closes. Her face turns a little red.
How does words about sex or anything leading up to it? She's never really talked about this with anyone before, and she thought talking about kissing was hard!]
Pretty carried away? We were just kissing, and then...
[Far from scandalized, Zatanna actually had to stop herself from laughing. Both in sheer delight for her friends, and from the coincidence of it all.]
I can't believe it--no, scratch that. I definitely can. But, still...you guys had sex too? ["too"] How? I mean, I know how, but how did it happen? Who initiated?
[Whatever reason we originally had for coming to North had been all but forgotten. The entirety of her focus was on Korra now. Eyes shining. She wanted to hear everything.]
Oh-- we didn't... go all the way? [Korra stumbles over the words a little, face red. Why is the actually doing part so much easier than the talking? Go figure.] But we went... pretty far. I don't think either of us really thought about stopping until...after. We sort of talked about it.
[Now that she's done rambling, Korra finally picks up on Zatanna's slip up.]
Wait... "too"? [She stares at Zatanna, then breaks out laughing.] You're kidding! You and Kon...?
[She'd been so excited, she hadn't even realized the minor slip at first. To her credit, she didn't blush...much...but she did have the grave to look sheepish. Less from the topic itself and more from the way she'd let Korra know.]
He really liked his present, okay?
[Obviously, there was more to that story. So much more. But one story at a time, and Korra's came first.]
It went great. [Korra's smile is soft and fond.] We decided to wait before going any...further. [Korra bites her lip. Seriously, why is she having so much trouble getting the words out?] So, I guess that means we will be, you know, some time later.
What about you? [Korra hastily turns back to Zatanna.] I'm guessing this is the present you were talking about last time?
[Nadia goes quiet for a second, too, a brief flicker of sadness behind her eyes. She thinks about that a lot, what will happen when this is all over. Will she get to keep seeing her boyfriend? Will they even go home? Is she still going to be sick?
There are so many questions and no answers to be found. She picks at the frayed edge of her sleeve.]
I hope so... There are a lot of things I want to know, but... [She thinks back to what Jack said, at the end of the their time underground and can feel her stomach twist into knots.] There was actually something I wanted to ask, ahm... Not just you, but other healers. About the kind of magic and medicine that's used where you're all from?
[Wow. And it was a testament to just how happy Korra looked that she didn't bother to make with the teasing. Though the admission that they hadn't gone quite as far as she and Kon had was...well, she supposed that the Superboys weren't always so in synch with one another.]
[Frankly, the fact that their love lives were as parallel as they were was amazing enough already.]
Not exactly.
I hadn't planned on it happening. It was like you said--it just kind of happened. [Regrets? None.] See....okay, this one might take a bit of explaining.
[Because the present might have seemed like that's where she'd been intending things to go, to anybody who wasn't in on the Joke.]
You know Kon's from a parallel word from me and Conner, right? And since you must've noticed there's two of them by now, it stands to reason there would be another me. And there is. I've never met her, but I've heard stories. And a lot of these stories seem to involve her wearing fishnet stockings.
[Why, she never used to know. Now, she was starting to get the attraction.]
I forget how it happened exactly--[No, she didn't, but the circumstances were too depressing to bring up in this particular conversation]--but he ended up getting me to promise I'd wear them for him sometime.
So I figured I'd surprise him on his birthday, while everybody else was away from the night, and it was just the two of us.
[She doesn't get it at first either. Then other memories begin to filter in, filling in the blanks--the bed being too soft that first night on the air ship as they left for Ba Sing Se. It'd taken her a while to figure out that she had gotten used to the hard, wooden beds at the air temple. Now, Korra was no soldier, not in the way Steve was, but those in the army usually slept on the ground when they were on the move, didn't they? It takes her some time to puzzle all this out instead of asking, quiet as she stares down at her hands.
What Steve is telling her now, it's not the same as what she knows, but she thinks she understands a little. Going through what he did, even the little things leave prints that are hard to erase. And those marks go unnoticed until something makes it known. Until the bed feels too soft underneath you.]
You got used to sleeping on the ground.
[Korra's voice is soft, a little uncertain as she ventures a guess. There's so many things she wants to say, but she's having some difficulty doing so. Though her hands stay steady, her gaze drops down. There's something else that's nagging at her. Some of his words hit a little too close to home, if she's honest with herself.]
There's... counselors for people who were in combat? [Those are the words she speaks. The fidgeting, the slightly lowered tone, the surprise--they say something else: This is normal? Needing a counselor after seeing combat? Her wondering probably proves Steve's point, and she doesn't even realize it.]
[His mouth twitches upwards into a humourless smile, more sad than anything.]
There are. And they do a lot of good for those that need them. It... took me a long time to admit that it wasn't a weakness to come out of a war without your head screwed on straight.
[He still struggles with that one in his own private heart. Admitting you need help is one thing. Accepting it quite another.]
The important thing to understand is that you aren't alone. Maybe no one shares your exact circumstances, but there are similarities in every war, every loss. Shared life experiences you can draw on. That sort of thing.
... Even if Shirayuki can always seem to tell the differences in his mood when someone disappears, and he did this exact same thing with her when Wally disappeared.
Damn it all.]
... Sakon. Loud, obnoxious, overly-friendly, carried around dice?
[It takes Korra a moment to even picture this, as baffled as she is. But that isn't the most important thing right now, so Korra just chalks it up to one of those world differences and focuses on the rest of Zatanna's story. She grins, giving Zatanna a playful nudge with her shoulder.]
Sooooooo, I'm guessing he really liked it if wearing them lead to...all this.
[She gestures vaguely between them. Though she's teasing just a little, Korra's really happy that things worked out so well for all of them. Especially since it was all unplanned.]
[If you promise to behave, Korra, maybe she'll show you too.]
[Explanations about what "fishnet stockings" actually entailed would have to wait; though she found the vague hand gestures strangely amusing, there was one particular point that...she had to bite her lower lip to keep from smiling too much. And even then, thinking back to what had transpired, it was difficult.]
Yes and no.
He was very affectionate in his thanking me for the present...but...I kind of was the one to ask him.
[More like he'd gotten her into such a mood, she was caught up in the heat of the moment and hadn't wanted to stop.]
[Korra can sense the change in Nadia's mood, and she quickly looks up at her.]
It's okay. I know the water-healing isn't something you see a lot, so... [With a shrug, she pulls her hands away, leaving a gash that's freshly scabbed over.]
I think this is the best I can do, but it's closed up now and the infection's gone. The rest shouldn't take too long to finish healing.
Thank you. [Nadia smiles faintly, looking down at her leg before tucking it close. At least she won't have to worry about infection, potentially losing it, or all sorts of other nasty things.
She bites her lip, trying to think of how to phrase this. Her health is not something she willingly shares and the only time she has, it was after she died the first time. That had been a special circumstance. But if they win and get to go home, but don't get their hands on the Yao technology that can keep her from being sick...
She needs a back-up plan. She wants her future.]
It's, ahm... Mostly I was wondering about -- about terminal illnesses. I mean, I know by the very definition asking is probably silly, but... but how far can your healing go to bring someone back? To keep them from, ahm... to give them time?
I think that's changed...maybe. Since whatever was reviving people isn't working anymore.
No one from Yao corp's bothered to show up since Kite was killed, though. I guess it's too much to hope that they're too busy squabbling over who gets to fill in his spot to bother us for a while.
